Electric power is standardized in all states across the USA. It is set at 110 Volts and 60 cycles. 220 Volt power is used in homes only for large appliances like stoves, water heaters and clothes dryers. It is not normally available for personal appliances. Cellular telephones and handheld devices are the best communication medium for most USA visitors. Many wireless networks in the US are now equipped with GSM technology allowing international travelers with compatible devices to communicate with US networks. Before traveling to the USA, check with your service provider about coverage. Sales Tax
In Central Florida, taxes on purchases range from 6.5 to 7 percent on all merchandise except "necessary" grocery items and medicine. A 6 percent resort tax is imposed on all hotel rooms in addition to the sales tax.
Tipping
It is customary to provide a 15 to 20 percent tip to service personnel such as table servers at dining venues, public transportation drivers, bartenders and beauticians. Porters are traditionally tipped $1-2 per bag. At many restaurants, the tip will already be added to the bill for groups of six or more. Ask if the tip has already been included when the server presents the check.
Driving
Americans drive on the right-hand side of the road! It is the law that everyone in the vehicle wear a seat belt and children under three years of age must travel in secured child-safety seats. Check with your rental car agent on where to obtain a seat. Right turns on red are permitted after a full stop, unless otherwise posted. Obey posted speed limits. Florida law carries a heavy penalty for driving under the influence of alcohol or having an open container of alcohol in the car.
