The IEEE SENSORS 2013 Program Committee is excited to announce that there will be a special Industry Lunch Panel on Tuesday, November 5th from 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Maryland Ballroom BC at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel (IEEE SENSORS 2013 hotel) on the topic of wearable sensors.

Overview:
With their ability to provide real-time feedback about our bodies, our movements, our activities, and our interaction with the world around us, wearable sensors promise to be a pervasive part of our everyday lives. Embedded systems provide wearable sensors with wireless connectivity and grant them a level of computing power undreamed of just a few years ago. This panel will facilitate a discussion about the possibilities for this emerging market as well as some remaining technology challenges, the solution to which will usher in this new revolution.
The panel discussion will focus on are various factors that must guide the design and development process for wearable sensors. In addition to the more common tradeoffs such as battery life, integration level, and feature set, these systems need to address human factors that will allow these devices to become an accepted (or even sought-after) feature of our daily attire. The panelists have a wide variety of approaches and applications for wearable technology and the session will highlight the benefits of their technology and platforms and lessons learned through the development process.

Ross Alcazar, XM Squared

Abhi Chavan, PhD, Corventis Inc

Dr. Chavan is Vice-President of Research, Product Development and Manufacturing Operations at Corventis, where he manages the R&D and Manufacturing organization with design facilities and operations spread across the globe. Corventis, located in St. Paul, Minnesota, is a pioneer in wireless remote diagnostics using wearable devices with the goals of,
Dr. Chavans medical device fields of interest include Cardiac Rhythm Management, Management of Heart Failure and Neuromodulation. In previous assignments, Dr. Chavan spent several years at Boston Scientific in Research & Product Development, managing projects related to Class III Cardiac Rhythm Management devices. In addition to core product development, Dr. Chavan also supported business development functions and managed the integration of acquired technologies including providing strategic support for developing clinical and regulatory strategy for new devices. Dr. Chavan also held various management and engineering positions with General Motors and Delphi Electronics, Siemens A.G. and Coherent Research. Over a 28 year career span, Dr. Chavan has published widely in the field of medical devices, automotive systems, circuits and sensors, and has over 40 worldwide patents issued. He serves on program committees for conferences in MEMS and Circuits areas and is a Senior Member of the IEEE. Dr. Chavan received his B.S.E.E (Valedictorian) from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda-India, his M.S.E.E. from Syracuse University, NY under a Case Center Award, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, under a General Motors Scholarship.

Tori Hanna,

Tori Hanna has spent 12 years in Sports Marketing at Under Armour. The majority of those years were focused on ensuring the Brands authenticity in various categories by forging relationships with athletes, teams, coaches, trainers and training facilities. Her main objective has been to integrate the Under Armour Brand and Products into the everyday lives of Under Armour’s key partners while communicating feedback and ideas to help improve the products functionalities. In 2013 Under Armour entered into the Digital Sport market with a Performance Monitoring device, Armour39™. She currently holds the position of Director of Strategic Product Engagement in Digital Sport, responsible for integrating the technology among UA’s partners and key influencers. |

Amar Kendale, MC10

Amar’s passion for creating products that help people to live healthier, safer, and happier lives led him to join MC10 in 2012. His deep technical acumen combined with his understanding of broad technology markets makes him uniquely qualified to lead MC10′s marketing and strategy activities. His experience spans more than a decade of operating and executive leadership roles in the life-science industry, with a strong record of driving innovation in healthcare. Amar comes to MC10 from Arsenal Medical, a venture-backed medical device startup, where he defined the company’s lead program, a first-of-its-kind bioabsorbable stent to treat peripheral artery disease, a product that is now in clinical studies. Prior to this Amar worked with Guidant (acquired by Boston Scientific in 2006), where he led the product development of a key cardiac surgery tool from concept to market, for which he earned the 2006 Cardiac Surgery Innovator of the Year award. Amar earned his BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, and he holds 5 issued patents with 6 pending. | |
Maurizio Macagno, Heapsylon

Maurizio is a co-founder and the VP of Development of Heapsylon, a Redmond WA based startup working on wearable sensors and wearable devices. A former software professional with over 20 years of software development and technical program management experience on a great breadth of technologies and industries, Maurizio started his journey in the industrial automation arena, writing firmware and control software for automation devices. After a brief parenthesis in the research field, working at a Fortune Global 500 telecom company in Italy, he then joined Microsoft Italy in 1999, where he worked for 6 years as a consultant and solution architect for top Italian Microsoft customers in the banking, retail, military, telco and manufacturing industries. He moved to USA in 2005 to later join Microsoft Xbox / Entertainment division, where he served as a Senior Program Manager for Xbox LIVE services until early 2013. He is also the founder of Green Tomatoes, a small company focused on internet services and apps. | |
Babak Parviz, Google |
Babak Parviz is the creator of Google Glass and a director at Google X. He received his BA in Literature from University of Washington; BS in Electronics Eng. from Sharif Univ. of Technology; MS in Physics, MS in Electrical Engineering, and PhD in Electrical Engineering from University of Michigan; and completed his postdoctoral training in Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University. His work has been selected twice (2008, 2012) as the invention of the year by Time and has been put on display at the London Museum of Science. He is the recipient of MIT Technology Review 35, NSF CAREER, and Creativity 50 awards among others. Thousands of articles have been written about his work. |
